Order

Common name: Sand Dollars

Scientific name: Clypeasteroida

Clypeasteroida is an order of echinoderms that includes the well-known sand dollars and sea biscuits. These invertebrates are characterized by their flattened, disk-like bodies and intricate patterns. In the reef aquarium, they are appreciated for their unique appearance and their role as detritivores, helping to clean up organic waste. They are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of tank mates. However, they require a sandy substrate to burrow and sift through for food, and care should be taken to ensure they are not outcompeted for food by more aggressive feeders.
