Alcyoniidae, commonly known as soft corals or leather corals, are a family of octocorals found in oceans worldwide. They are characterized by their fleshy appearance and lack of a rigid calcium carbonate skeleton, unlike stony corals. Members of this family, such as the popular genera Alcyonium and Sarcophyton, are well-liked in the reefkeeping hobby for their ease of care and ability to adapt to various lighting conditions. They often host a variety of symbiotic relationships, including with photosynthetic zooxanthellae, which provide them with nutrients through photosynthesis.
