Mushrooms

11 species

Mushrooms, also known as Corallimorphs, are a fascinating group of soft corals that are popular among reef hobbyists due to their hardiness and vibrant colors. They belong to the order Corallimorpharia and are closely related to both stony corals and sea anemones. One of the most appealing aspects of mushrooms is their ease of care, making them an excellent choice for beginners and experienced aquarists alike. They are relatively undemanding in terms of lighting and water flow, thriving in a variety of conditions that would challenge more delicate coral species. This versatility allows them to be placed in various positions within the aquarium, from the substrate to rockwork, where they can add a splash of color and texture.

Mushrooms come in a wide range of colors and patterns, including blue, green, red, and even multi-colored varieties. Some popular species include the Ricordea florida, Ricordea yuma, and Rhodactis spp., each offering unique aesthetic and biological characteristics. For example, Ricordea mushrooms are known for their bumpy, bubble-like appearance, while Discosoma mushrooms often have a smoother, more flattened look. Rhodactis mushrooms can grow quite large and are sometimes referred to as "hairy mushrooms" due to their textured surface.

These corals are also known for their ability to reproduce both sexually and asexually, often spreading across the aquarium through a process called budding or pedal laceration. This can lead to a beautiful, natural propagation within the tank, but it also means that they can sometimes overtake other corals if not monitored. It's essential to provide them with enough space to grow without encroaching on their neighbors.

Feeding mushrooms is generally straightforward, as they primarily rely on photosynthesis through their symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae algae. However, they can also benefit from occasional target feeding of small meaty foods like brine shrimp or plankton, which can promote faster growth and more vibrant colors. Overall, mushrooms are a delightful and resilient addition to any reef aquarium, offering both beauty and ease of care.
